Soliloquy (a style in writing/drama) - what I am doing here at your portal - further defines 'the people who talk to themselves aren't crazy, actually geniuses (wow!).. though little socially withdrawn* ..with little depression* somewhere..' I am concerned here with the above two asterisk marked terms, as what brings it to one's mental horizon? Among major causes, I believe one, one's Retirement.
It's said, a new car's value is depreciated by 30% immediately once it comes out of a showroom. Coming out of the office finally, cuts down our market value by 70% (I feel personally). One may call this 70% as one's market value, identity or work associated values. Many people connected with us due to this component, get disconnected the other day. So, we are aloof by 70% of our colleagues and enthusiasm. Only those colleagues remain with us whom we rather call friends as they occupy some more our personal space, over and above that 70% professional one. (It took me three years to realize!) Discussing small things - these 70 will hardly make you feel happy, as earlier, in getting your calls etc. If they are calling you for any reasons, it will be as if they are obliging you!.. Being cut off by this 70% fervor of usual life, we too gradually come in social withdrawal mode leading to depression - as at one stage, sooner or later, we have to accept this detachment. So, post retirement, we survive only with the remaining 30% of our zeal, and struggle to take it upwards in one direction (family/friends) and the other (re-employment/hobbies etc).
Transiting through my gloomy period, once I was determined to join an ngo to spend some time with distressed/isolated persons. (Cairo says, 'Feb.29 born persons would always help the other in same situation'. I could pat myself as patting is the best medicine!) It was only then that it occurred to me as, in fact, who is there with me in my not a much happy time!? And the process of detaching the hopes I kept attached to unreciprocative persons began that gave me a relief and I started enjoying and upgrading with the Rest for the rest of my life. To be more clear about this "detachment", I have started reading the Gita!.. This is just sharing my own experience and thoughts (and not a debate) and I would gladly share yours.

'भाभी'

'भाभी'

-- एक बहुत ही प्यारा शब्द और एहसास है! मैं तब आठ साल का था। अम्माजी हॉस्पिटल में एडमिट थीं। ठीक अम्माजी की ही तरह वह मुझे तैयार कर स्कूल भेजती थीं। वैसे ही दही रिड़क कर मक्खन से परांठा देती थीं। कई वर्ष बाद तक, मुझे अपने छोटे-मोटे कपड़े धोते देख, कहती थीं- "हटो, हटो..!" बहुत सुंदर थीं। अपने पत्रों में बड़े भैया उनका यूं हाल-चाल पूछते थे: "और 'अंग्रेज़' का क्या हाल है?"' पटियाला के एक डॉक्टर परिवार से आईं, बरसों से राजस्थान के पाली शहर में हैं। अब वह अपने 80वें वर्ष को छूने की कोशिश कर रही हैं.. काफी अस्वस्थ हैं। भाग कर मिल आने की इच्छा है। ह्रदय के प्रत्येक स्पंदन, प्रार्थना की सभी व्यक्त-अव्यक्त भावनाओं, वायुमंडल की अनगिनत तरंगों व प्रकृति की सर्वशक्तियों से उन्हें शीघ्र स्वास्थ्य लाभ कराने की कामना है!

शब्दजाल

एक परिश्रमी लकड़हारे का कुल्हाड़ा कुएं में गिर गया था। कुएं से प्रकट हुई एक देवी ने उसे पहले एक सोने का, फिर चांदी का कुल्हाड़ा दिया, जो उसने लेने से मना कर दिया कि उसका नहीं है। प्रसन्न होकर देवी ने उसे उसका लोहे का कुल्हाड़ा देते हुए कोई भी एक वरदान मांगने को कहा। उसने एक दिन की मोहलत ली और घर आकर सबसे पूछा। बूढ़ी माँ ने अपनी आँखों की रौशनी, पत्नी ने संतान, और पिता ने अपना खोया राज्य मांगने को कहा। वरदान एक, इच्छाएं तीन। अंततः वह अपने एक मित्र के पास गया। उसने तुरंत ही उसे सलाह दी कि मांगो: "मेरी माँ अपने राज्य में सुखपूर्वक अपने पोतों का मुख देख सके!" वरदान ग्रान्टेड! पर देवी को लगा कि वह "थ्री-इन-वन" में मुझे 'चीट' कर गया है। अतः एक चेतावनी भी दे डाली कि आज से तुम्हारे उस कायस्थ (भटनागर, आदि) दोस्त के घर सरस्वती तो रहेगी, किन्तु लक्ष्मी नहीं रहेगी जिसने यह शब्द-जाल बुना है!..

तारे ज़मीं पर

'चंदामामा' पत्रिका में 'विक्रम-बेताल' की कहानी कुछ यूं शुरू होती थी: विक्रमादित्य ने हार न मानी.. हमेशा की तरह, वृक्ष से उतार कर शव को कंधे पर डाला और आगे बढ़ चले। इस पर शव में स्थित बेताल ने कहा: "राजन तुम्हारी थकान दूर करने को (फेसबुक की) एक कहानी सुनाता हूं। अंत में मेरे प्रश्न का उत्तर यदि नहीं दे पाओगे तो तुम्हारा सर धड़ से अलग हो जाएगा। अतः ध्यान से सुनो -- कलियुग में जब किसी को कोई काम नहीं होता तो वह फेसबुक के सहारे अपने दिन काटता है। अपनी किसी पोस्ट को एक 'लाइक' मिलने पर वह स्वयं को श्रेष्ठ, दो 'लाइक' पर परम श्रेष्ठ, और तीन पर तो सर्वश्रेष्ठ मानकर लोटपोट ही हो जाता है। यहां मैं जिस प्राणी की बात कर रहा हूं उसकी 'लोटपोट' व हमारे 'चंदा मामा' के समय से कुछ रचनाएं छपती रही हैं। लेकिन अभी कुछ दिन पहले उसने फेसबुक पर एक ऐसी तस्वीर 'तारे ज़मीं पर' पोस्ट कर दी कि चार 'लाइक' मिल गए और बवाल मच गया। नीचे वह तस्वीर देखो और बताओ कि आखिर यह प्राणी तारों को ज़मीन पर कैसे ले आया?" तब राजा ने यूं उत्तर दिया: "हे बेताल! इस कलियुग में जब महिलाएं शॉपिंग करती हैं तो पुरुष मॉल में इधर-उधर उनके बैग थामे बैठे रहते है या बच्चों को संभाले रहते हैं। ऐसे ही खाली समय में इस प्राणी ने शोरूम की लाइटों का अक्स फर्श पर देखा और फोटो खींच कर 'तारे ज़मीं पर' नाम दे कर फेसबुक पर पोस्ट कर दिया।" राजा के जवाब से संतुष्ट होकर बेताल हंसा और उड़ कर फिर पेड़ पर जा बैठा।

मां

मां दुर्गा के नवें रूप 'सिद्धिदात्री' में पहली आठों देवियों के रूप भी समाहित माने जाते हैं। मां सिद्धिदात्री का पूजा-मंत्र है:
सिद्धगन्धर्वयक्षद्यायै, असुरैरमरैरपि।
सेव्यमाना सदा भूयात, सिद्धिदा सिद्धिदायिनी।।
अर्थात 'सिद्ध, गंधर्व, यक्ष, असुर और अमरता प्राप्त देवों के द्वारा भी पूजित और सिद्धियां को प्रदान करने वाली देवी हमें भी आठों सिद्धियां प्रदान करें।'
प्राचीन शास्त्रों में वर्णित आठ सिद्धियां -- अणिमा, महिमा, गरिमा, लघिमा, प्राप्ति, प्राकाम्य, ईशित्व एवं वशित्व -- इन्हीं देवी की पूजा और कृपा से प्राप्त की जा सकती हैं। हनुमानजी को यह सभी सिद्धियां सीताजी ने प्रदान की थीं जिनसे वह अनेक असाध्य कार्य भी कर पाए। हनुमान चालीसा में भी यही वर्णन है कि 'अष्ट सिद्धि नव निधि के दाता, अस वर दीन्ह जानकी माता'। भगवान महादेव ने भी देवी सिद्धिदात्री की कठिन तपस्या कर इनसे यह सिद्धियां प्राप्त की थीं और इन्हीं देवी की कृपा से महादेव की आधी देह देवी की हो गई थी और वह अर्धनारीश्वर कहलाए। यह देवी कमल-पुष्प पर आसीन हैं। इनका वाहन भी सिंह है।
प्रायः अधिकांश देवियों का वाहन सिंह क्यों? अनादि काल मे पार्वतीजी घोर तपस्या में लीन थीं। तभी एक भूखा शेर उनकी ओर आया और उनका तप पूर्ण होने की प्रतीक्षा करने लगा। कई वर्षों की प्रतीक्षा में शेर बेहद कमज़ोर हो चुका था। देवी ने उसकी प्रतीक्षा को ही तपस्या मानकर उसे अपना वाहन बनाया।

Memory lane ..

..walking down memory lane!

Since I topped NDMC's Hindi Noting & Drafting Competition thrice consecutively, they were planning to honour me with a Silver Medal. However, I resigned from the civic body before the function and joined Indian Airlines, initially at Srinagar. Here, I began to get their telegrams to make arrangements to reach in time to get the award as "you have to come on the stage first of all". Being on probation, I couldn't make it. Sometime later, our OLIC team visited Srinagar and noticed my small achievements. Had I informed them of my First Prize, I would have been granted special leave and passage to get the same (they told me) that I collected much later. They published my brief profile in our news letter "Image". I was then also deputed as part-time Hindi Translator besides my normal duties as a Traffic Assistant. In 1987, our Srinagar station was awarded the Rajbhasha Trophy for best Hindi work. The Trophy was given to the then Station Manager, Mr. R. Rai by the Lt. Governor at Chandigarh. On his return, Mr Rai gave me two photos of receiving the award which are still with me and being shared with his approval. I also received an appreciation letter in this regard. A special 4-page Souvenir was also published later.

'तुम-सा' नहीं देखा!

3 मई 2016 की पोस्ट: "अभी अभी नाना बना हूं!" इस पंक्ति के साथ मैंने अपनी ताज़ा फ़ोटो ग्रुप में पोस्ट की है कि देख लो नाना ऐसा होता है - कहीं किसी को ऐसा भ्रम न हो जाए जैसा मुझे बचपन में हो गया था - रेडियो पर एक गाना सुन कर - 'यूं तो हमने.. तुमसा नहीं देखा'! गाना तो समझ से बाहर था। पर, कई साल यही सोचता रहा कि यह "तुमसा" शायद कोई बाइस्कोप या बंदर का खेल होता होगा। कई बाइस्कोप वालों से तो पूछा भी था, "भैया, 'तुमसा' दिखा रहे हो?"
